Anderson Girls Earn First Austin-area Win at States

Anderson High School became the first Austin-area school in TISCA Water Polo history to win a game at the Texas High School Championships on Saturday. The girls, who earned the West Region’s second seed, defeated North Region No. 4 Denton, 6-3 in a consolation match that placed the Trojans in ninth place at the annual tournament. The result is the best ever for an Austin-area team in the season finale.

Anderson fell to The Woodlands in their first round match to place them in the consolation bracket.

The win is another sign of improvement in the West Region, which lost the traditionally strong programs from San Antonio’s Northside ISD after the 2012 season and has now grown to over 20 mostly new teams from Waco to McAllen. The previous best result for an Austin-area team was a year ago when the boys from Round Rock, north of Austin, tied Houston’s Westside to place 11th in the championships.

Six schools from the region competed in the Championships at Texas A&M. Complete tournament results are here.
