Updated Calendar, Kickoff Events, Coaches Poll

Updated Calendar

The West Region calendar has been significantly updated to include many new competitive opportunities for regional teams. Note that Varsity West Region Championships will take place at UT on April 19-20. Consolidated/Co-ed/JV Championships are scheduled for April 27 at Milburn Pool in Cedar Park. Events on the calendar that are preceded by a question mark are tentative.

Longhorn Spring Kickoff Tournament

The TISCA West Region season will get under way on February 23 with a new tournament hosted by Longhorn Aquatics. Look for our recent announcement with registration information. For information on this and all tournaments and competition this season visit tiscawestwaterpolo.com.

Spring Kickoff Event for Parents, Athletes, Referees

Longhorn Aquatics will host an information session and clinic for new or prospective athletes as well as some afternoon games for high school athletes. This will be a free event hosted by Longhorn along with USA Water Polo. Several key issues will be covered between 9 AM and 1 PM.

  • 9:00 AM: USA Water Polo Town Hall Meeting. This will basically be covering the state of USAWP/Southwest Zone, UIL Status, Texas Development/Sports Growth, New USAWP Rules/Implementation, How can parents/volunteers help grow the sport, Q&A Session, etc. This would be for the current parents of USAWP athletes.
  • 10:30 AM: Parent/Athlete Education. This will basically be a history of the sport, basic offense/defense, basic rules clinic (including advantage rule), etc. This would be for all parents, athletes both club and high school.
  • 11:30 AM: College Meeting. This would be essentially a group College Meeting going over the ins/outs/options of playing water polo in college. This would be for anyone interested in attending (athletes, parents, coaches, etc.).
  • 12:30 PM: New Athlete Clinic. This would be for new athletes and would be 30 minutes in the classroom going over the new rules and then 30 minutes on deck during the first game explaining what is happening.

Weekly Coaches Poll

For the 2019 season coaches will be asked to submit a weekly vote which will be published on the website by mid week. Coaches will place teams in rank order as they see fit based on their observations of officially sanctioned competition. The categories are girls varsity; boys varsity; girls consolidated/JV; boys consolidated/co-ed/JV. Click here for a sample of a coaches poll matrix.

Pre-Season Survey

Coaches of any team – varsity, consolidated, JV, co-ed – that plans to participate in the TISCA West Region this season should complete this short survey. The survey will remain open until opening day.

TISCA Membership

A reminder that to compete in the West Region the coaches of each team must be members of TISCA (Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association). Click here for the 2018-19 registration form. Registration is still open for water polo coaches; ignore the December deadline.

Regionals Date, Updated Competition, Referee Info

Scheduling

The calendar has been updated with some new competition and schedule changes. West Regionals will take place at UT on April 19-20, with play-in games on the 18th if necessary.

A tournament at Micki Krebsbach in Round Rock has been added to the calendar for March 8-9. Competition should begin at 6:00 PM on Friday with matches for Round Rock-area teams. Games will take place all day on Saturday. Tournament registration will be available soon.

Referee Requests and Info

TAWPO, which organizes water polo referees throughout Texas for all levels of competition, has a page that all coaches should consult. For those who plan to host weekday games in particular, you’ll find the proper link for making a request for referees. Instructions for requesting referees for weekend tournaments are coming soon.

Also, the state is in constant need of referees. If you or someone you know is interested, contact TAWPO and give the web site a look.

2019 Survey

The 2019 high school water polo season is around the corner and the TISCA Water Polo West Region Committee is excited to begin another huge season for the region.

As we have done for the past several years we are asking for the help of anyone affiliated with aquatics in our region. Leadership News

TISCA West Region coaches met at the annual Coaches Clinic in Austin in September with the election of a regional chairperson on the agenda. No nominations for the position were submitted. James Smith will remain the regional representative until the next election. For the 2019 season Jonathan Landero of PSJA and Allie Hill of LBJ High School will join him as advisors.

Scheduling

Currently the West Region competition calendar is almost entirely tentative. Coaches and team administrators, please contact the committee as soon as possible about hosting tournaments or other matches. We have already received interest from several teams who want to get matches on their schedule.

New Teams

We’ve received news of several new programs joining us this spring: Harlingen, Austin HS, McCallum, and Vandegrift will or are expected to field varsity teams in 2019 contributing to the steady growth of the region. It is extremely easy for new teams to compete with us. Be sure to contact the committee if you are interested in forming a new program, varsity or consolidated.

2017 Season Introduction, Survey

The 2017 high school water polo season is upon us and the TISCA Water Polo West Region Committee is excited to begin what looks to be the biggest ever season for our schools and growing water polo programs.

As we did one year ago we are asking for your help. Please take less than five minutes to complete this Google survey to help us understand our current and future membership demands.

More about this coming season:

  • The schedule is (nearly) set with some open dates for competition remaining. See the calendar. Contact the host team to enter¬†individual tournaments.
  • A reminder that any team must play at least two TISCA-sanctioned games to qualify for the West Region Championships.
  • We encourage coaches to attend a clinic on Saturday, February 25 where we’ll cover subjects such as rules, practice planning, technical skills and tactics.
  • The West Regional Championships will be a¬†two-day event in San Antonio on April 21-22. The top four teams qualify for the state championships in Lewisville on May 5-6.
